A Lesson in Self-Worth

A Lesson in Self-Worth

“You know Paul… There’s a lot of hurt and pain here,” he said. “From what I’m hearing, there’s definitely a questioning of your self-worth. Does it feel like, perhaps, you may feel that you’re not worthy of being loved?” And that hit me. It was all the words I had felt but never was able…

The Family Cookbook

The Family Cookbook

By Paul Blase One of the weird things about getting older is the futile attempt to escape mortality. You start to lose people by the time you become a young adult, perhaps that’s grandparents or great-grandparents. Then, into your 20s, you may lose a few friends. By your 30s, you’ve likely had a child, perhaps…

Hasta La Proxima

Hasta La Proxima

By Paul Blase I’m writing this as I pass Exit 0 on I-10 outside El Paso, Texas. We’re crossing back into New Mexico. This past weekend in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, I spent with a coworker’s family. There’s a lot I want to cover, so let’s start with the days leading up to the visit. I…

You Aren’t Special

You Aren’t Special

By Paul Blase I recently helped write an essay for a friend. She had a bit of writer’s block but also wanted to make a strong statement about her educational journey. One statement stood out more than others: “I was always told that I was gifted and special.” To be fair, this is something that…

A Lesson in Culture

A Lesson in Culture

By Paul Blase A word that often gets thrown around a lot is “culture.” We hear the term used in everything from the customs and norms of countries, the camaraderie in the workplace, the winning attitude of a sports team – you catch my drift. It’s seemingly multifaceted with a never-ending list of applications. I’ve…

We Can Do Anything; Not Everything

We Can Do Anything; Not Everything

By Paul Blase One of the greatest joys I’ve had in my life was being a guest presenter for the College of Charleston Student Leadership Council and at Trident Technical College in Charleston, South Carolina. This wouldn’t have been possible without a good friend and mentor: Jason Torres. Jason is a life coach. The first…

The Grass is Always Greener Where You Spray Paint It

The Grass is Always Greener Where You Spray Paint It

By Paul Blase There’s a saying I’ve been pondering lately. Something that I feel everyone’s heard but often misunderstands. “Fake it till you make it.” It’s fairly easy to imagine what this means. In the music world, it’s possible to buy views, likes, comments, and shares on various social media platforms. In this regard, musicians…

A Lesson in Discussion

A Lesson in Discussion

By Paul Blase Fortunately, as someone who’s been inquisitive their whole life, as well as receiving higher education, I’ve been able to learn about all sorts of obscure things. I mean, hell, when I’m bored, I’m usually watching videos on popular YouTube channels RealLifeLore, Half As Interesting, Kurzgesagt, Today I Found Out, and so many more. I’ve fallen…

A Lesson in Coercion

A Lesson in Coercion

By Paul Blase It was February of 2012. Just eight months and a handful of days earlier, I was on cloud nine. I received an offer to play hockey in the 1. Liga, the second tier of professional hockey in Slovakia. Although I had some professional games under my belt already as part of a…

“He” by Paul Blase

“He” by Paul Blase

He was never your type, but then again neither was I, He probably makes you smile the way I once did, He probably says the right things to make your day, He probably puts in effort where it matters most, He probably makes you feel safe and secure, He probably makes you believe there’s a…

You cannot believe in free will and God simultaneously. Here is the final installment of “The Mind From a Dark Room:”
There is some utility in the first two parts of the series, but if you relate to them, please, immediately hit reverse..
Most of this isn't real. I just think it's worth exploring the frame of mind people have at their lowest. This is me trying to tap into a time when that was the case. Enjoy??
I believe this is Paul’s best work to date. Very insightful, aware stuff. This is what WYSB is at its core. Link in bio, sure, but just go to wysb.me lol.
I’m not really saying anything, I’m just saying. It’s possible I/we need to drop this idea that God is our “buddy.” I’m not “palling around” with my friend God. He’s pretty frustrating, actually. Anyway, link in bio.
This is out of "the vault," so to speak, as poetry is kind of lame; however, sometimes I feel like I can do it, so I just do it. Besides, giving to her (ha!) or reading it to her would've just made her think I was a fru... Nvm. Anyway, here's a cringey poem:
